BMW has unveiled the i Vision Dynamics at the Frankfurt Motor Show today (Tuesday 12th September) previewing a new model in the company's i line-up - expected to be the i5.
The pure-electric four-door saloon has a range of 373 miles, a top speed of 120mph, and will complete the 0-62mpg sprint in four seconds.
Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG, said: "At the BMW Group, the future of electric mobility has already arrived. We have more electrified vehicles on the road than any established competitor and are committed to expanding our activities in the field of electric mobility as part of our NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy.
"By 2025 we will be offering 25 models with an electrified drive system – of which 12 will be pure-electric. With the BMW i Vision Dynamics we are showcasing how we envisage future electric mobility between the i3 and i8: a dynamic and progressive, four-door Gran Coupe. We are therefore electrifying the heart of the BMW brand and, at the same time, elevating BMW i into a totally new dimension."
With a size and shape similar to a conventional compact executive saloon like BMW's 3 Series, the i Vision Dynamics is aimed squarely at the likes of Tesla's Model 3. Rather than going down an SUV route as many had predicted, and which Jaguar has with its I-Pace, the i Vision Dynamics is clearly a more traditional model - though with BMW's i twist.
As the name suggests, the model's driving dynamics should live up to BMW's famously high standards. Advanced technology will also provide semi-autonomous and connected driving capabilities, while the concept's design previews a few design elements that are set to feature on future models.
Klaus Fröhlich Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development, said: "Sheer driving pleasure and e-mobility are the perfect fit. It shows that electro-mobility has reached the heart of our brand. We are going for the lead!
"That's why the BMW i Vision Dynamics stands for so much more. It symbolises our growth strategy in electro-mobility. It provides a glimpse into our future: A four-door Gran Coupé positioned between the i3 and the i8. Its design is modelled on the BMW Vision NEXT 100 from our centenary year.
"But, as you can see, it only takes us a few years, not 30, to turn visions into reality. I can promise you, the BMW i Vision Dynamics will go into series-production.
"That belongs to our tradition. Think of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. Within just a few years, it became the BMW i8. Today, the i8 is most desirable plug-in hybrid sports car in the world.
"You see: We deliver on our promises! And I am confident that in e-mobility, we will also be the leading provider of premium vehicles."
The model will also introduce BMW's latest generation of battery and motor technology, which promises greater energy density and more power from the drivetrain.
Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, said: "With the i3 and i8 we have designed a revolutionary city car and a revolutionary sports car.
"And now the BMW i Vision Dynamics is combining electric mobility with the core values of BMW: dynamism and elegance. We are therefore demonstrating how the product range and the design language of BMW i can be evolved further into other concepts."
The concept comes off the back of BMW's announcement that 25 electrified models will be launched by 2025, 12 of which will be fully electric. The roll-out will be across all brands and model series. The BMW Group includes BMW, Mini, Rolls Royce, and BMW Motorad.
